The Kumbungu District Assembly was established as a separate administrative district in June 2012 by Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2061. It was carved out of the then Tolon/Kumbungu District, which had originally been created in 1988 under L.I. 1497.
This separation formed part of a nationwide decentralization effort by the Government of Ghana to bring governance closer to the people, enhance grassroots participation, and promote equitable development. Following the split, the remaining part became the Tolon District with Tolon as its capital, while the newly created Kumbungu District had Kumbungu as its capital.
Since its inception, the Kumbungu District Assembly has worked to fulfill its mission of delivering effective and efficient services through participatory and accountable local governance. The Assembly has played a key role in improving infrastructure, social services, and economic opportunities for the people of the district.
The Assembly has been led by the following District Chief Executives (DCEs) since its creation:
- Hon. Iddi Manza Mahama – 2012 to 2013
- Hon. Alhassan Musah – 2013 to 2016
- Hon. Abdul Salam Hamza Abdul Fatawu – 2017 to 2024
- Hon. Alhaj Imoro Yakubu Kakpagu – 2024 to present
